Volunteer News
  • DS received Honorable Mention as Host Site of the Year in the 2008 National Alternative Break Awards. DS was one of only two nonprofits organizations honored by Break Away for their outstanding volunteer programs. Over 36,000 college students and 400 non-profit organizations participated in Break Away programs in 2008.

    Break Away is a leading national organization in the alternative break movement. Break Away partners colleges with nonprofit organizations, facilitating the use of student volunteers to address urgent social issues and needs in communities around the world.   • Liz Blong (Vilanova U. ’08) is interning with Dalit Solidarity from June through September. Liz participated in our 2008 Service Adventours program with Villanova. Following that 2-week experience, Liz decided to spend the summer between graduation and the start of her career with Ernst & Young in New York City, working as a teaching assistant in our Dalit Leadership Academy.   • Dalit Solidarity has joined the Brookings Institution Initiative on International Volunteering and Service. The initiative is a three-year project to double the number of Americans that volunteer overseas by 2010. Learn more about the initiative. >

Advocacy
  • On July 24, 2007, the US House of Representatives passed a historic resolution condemning the caste system and untouchability in India.
  • A similar resolution was passed by the European Union Parliament in February, 2007.
  • On Sep. 4, 2007, the General Assembly of Pennsylvania also introduced a resolution condemning the caste system.
